Which microorganism causes cholera?

Cholera is caused by Vibrio cholerae, a gram-negative curved bacillus. It produces cholera toxin, which stimulates excessive secretion of electrolytes and water into the intestinal lumen, leading to profuse “rice-water” diarrhea, dehydration, and shock if untreated.
